Many factors can cause fat to accumulate around the stomach, such as weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, pregnancy, genetics, and more. The stomach is one of the body’s natural fat storage areas, and it is often susceptible to diet and exercise-resistant fat. While some patients can tone their stomachs using traditional methods alone, many struggle, leading them to seek more effective solutions. Stomach liposuction offers an effective way to target your stubborn fat deposits and finally see results.

About Stomach Liposuction
Stomach liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that targets and reduces fat around the midsection. This procedure is a variant of liposuction that focuses on recontouring the stomach, with many patients seeking this procedure after undergoing pregnancy or weight loss.
At Aeris, our surgical team specifically performs power-assisted liposuction (PAL) using PAL® by MicroAire. This liposuction technology features a motorized cannula that sends powerful vibrations beneath the skin to emulsify your fat. (2) This allows us to break up your targeted fat deposits more efficiently while minimizing damage to the surrounding tissues.
Abdominal Etching
Abdominal etching is a specialized technique that your surgeon can perform to restore a more athletic appearance to your stomach and midsection. It strategically removes fat to highlight the natural contours and sculpt of your rectus abdominis and oblique muscles. This technique is commonly sought after by male patients, but certain women may benefit, too.
Benefits
Stomach liposuction offers several benefits, such as:
- Targeted Fat Removal: This procedure can precisely eliminate fat from your stomach region to restore a flatter, more toned appearance.
- Enhanced Definition: Stomach liposuction can improve the visibility of the muscles in the midsection.
- Elevated Self-Esteem: Reducing excess fat in this area can boost confidence.
- Tailored Treatment Plans: The surgeons at Aeris tailor each treatment according to patients’ unique anatomy, goals, and desires.
Candidates
You may be a suitable candidate for stomach liposuction if you have accumulated excess fat around your abdomen that will not respond to traditional lifestyle changes, such as dieting or exercise.
To qualify for your procedure, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. You should be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine. You should also be at a stable, maintainable weight and have good skin elasticity if you do not plan to undergo a skin removal procedure.
Personal Consultation
Each patient is different, which is why we ask that you attend a personal consultation before scheduling your stomach liposuction procedure. During this consultation, your surgeon will meet with you one-on-one to discuss what happens during stomach liposuction, finalize your candidacy, and create your treatment plan. They will also perform a physical evaluation to assess your anatomy and skin elasticity.
From there, your surgeon will put together a one-of-a-kind treatment plan for your procedure. They will determine the most effective approaches and may recommend pairing your procedure with another for more cohesive results. They will also take the time to answer and address any questions you may have.

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your stomach liposuction procedure, you will need to begin making certain preparations. To guide you, the surgeons at Aeris will provide you with a set of comprehensive pre-operative instructions. They may direct you to:
- Manage Certain Substances: You will need to discontinue using any medications or supplements that can thin your blood.
- Arrange Time Away: Prepare to take time away from your career, social responsibilities, and other commitments to give yourself time to heal.
- Prepare Transportation: Coordinate a ride home with a trusted friend or relative after your procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself.
- Fill Your Prescriptions: Pick up any medications you will need during your recovery in advance.
- Stop Smoking: Cease any nicotine use at least four weeks before your procedure. Smoking can cause complications during the procedure, as well as during the healing phase.
- Avoid Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol in the days before and after your procedure.
Procedure
The surgeons at Aeris perform stomach liposuction at our surgical center. The duration of your procedure may vary, but you can expect it to be somewhere between one and three hours. General anesthesia will be administered to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
Your surgeon will place small incisions around your targeted fat deposits before injecting a tumescent fluid. This solution mixes lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline to numb the local tissues, minimize bleeding, and swell your fat cells—making them easier to remove. (2) Your surgeon will then insert the motorized cannula through your incisions. The cannula will oscillate back and forth to emulsify and break up your fat before suctioning it, leaving the area flatter and smoother.
Recovery
After a stomach liposuction procedure, it is common to experience some bruising, swelling, and tenderness around the treated areas. These effects are temporary and will gradually subside on their own, but you may also manage them by using the medications your surgeon prescribed as directed and getting plenty of rest. Your surgeon will provide you with a compression garment to wear throughout your recovery. You must wear it for as long as your surgeon advises, as it will minimize swelling and protect your renewed contours as you heal.
You may return to light activities and desk work after resting for approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to refrain from engaging in any physically demanding or strenuous activities until your surgeon provides clearance.
You will receive a full set of post-operative instructions to help you navigate your recovery. By following each one, you can return to your routine more quickly with your ideal results.
Results
You will see the full results of your stomach liposuction once you have fully recovered. While results may vary, you can expect a flatter stomach and smoother, more sculpted contours.
The results of your stomach liposuction will be permanent, allowing you to enjoy your new curves for several years. However, it is important that you maintain a stable weight, as fluctuations may alter your appearance.
Corresponding Procedures
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can restore a smoother, flatter abdomen by removing excess skin. This is a very commonly performed procedure, especially after liposuction. While liposuction is effective for removing stubborn fat, it has little to no effect on sagging skin. If you would like to tighten your results and address muscle separation and belly button repair, a tummy tuck may help you achieve your aesthetic goals alongside liposuction.

FAQ
What makes power-assisted liposuction different from traditional liposuction?
Power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating cannula to help break down and emulsify the fat, while traditional liposuction uses a manual cannula. Traditional liposuction has become less commonly used, with many surgeons opting for variations that make the procedure less labor-intensive, more precise, and more efficient.
Can stomach liposuction help me lose weight?
No, stomach liposuction cannot help you lose weight, as it is a body-contouring procedure. In order to qualify for your procedure, you should already have completed your weight loss transformation and achieved a stable weight.
How much fat will my surgeon remove during the procedure?
The amount of fat your surgeon removes will vary depending on your specific anatomy and goals.
What type of anesthesia will my surgeon use when performing stomach liposuction?
The surgeons at Aeris use general anesthesia when performing liposuction, but they may use local anesthesia when performing more minor corrections.
Can my surgeon combine my stomach liposuction with another aesthetic procedure?
Yes, your surgeon may integrate several other procedures into your treatment plan. During your consultation, they can assess your candidacy for our other procedures and provide you with personalized recommendations based on your concerns.
