Open rhinoplasty is the gold standard for nasal reshaping procedures. This procedure is designed to enhance the appearance and function of the nose through various restructuring and modification processes. The open rhinoplasty technique consists of an incision being made across the columella, or the flesh between the nostrils, to allow the surgeon to have a clear view of the internal nasal structures. We ask that each patient attend a personal consultation at Aeris before undergoing their procedure. Our surgeons will discuss the details of open rhinoplasty with each individual before conversing openly with them about their medical history, concerns, and desired results. The nose will also be evaluated, and we will use the VECTRA 3-D computer simulation program to create a rendering of what each patient’s potential results could look like. Preparation
Your surgeon or another member of our team will provide each patient with a set of personalized preparation instructions during their consultation. It is essential to follow each instruction, as preparation is key to the best results.
We ask that each patient discontinue using certain medications and herbal supplements, especially those that contain blood-thinning properties. Consuming alcohol should be avoided before and after the procedure. Nicotine use will also need to be stopped temporarily for optimal results.
Patients will need to take time away from work and other social commitments to focus on relaxing and recovering. Any necessary medications should be picked up in advance. Transportation home from the procedure should be arranged ahead of time, as well as at-home assistance from a trusted friend or family member.
Procedure
On the day of the procedure, each patient will be led to a private facility where their skin will be cleansed and sterilized. General anesthesia will be administered to ensure each patient’s comfort.
The surgeon will make incisions in the columella, the small strip of flesh in between the nostrils. This ensures minimal scar visibility. Through this incision, the surgeon will have access to the underlying structures of the nose. Adjustments may include dorsal hump reduction, nasal base stabilization, tip refinement, and other structural enhancements. Once the desired corrections have been achieved, the incisions will be closed. A nasal splint will be placed on the treated area, and each patient will be left to rest under the watch and care of our team.
Recovery
After the procedure, patients will be discharged to recover at home. Like many other procedures, it is common to experience discomfort during the initial healing stages. These feelings are temporary and may be managed through the use of ice and pain medications.
After five to ten days, each individual will be asked to return for a post-operative appointment where their nasal splint will be removed. Patients can often return to their normal routines within two weeks, but should continue to avoid physical or high-impact activities for several more weeks. The surgeon or another member of our team will provide more detailed recovery instructions during each personal consultation.
Results
Patients may be able to notice improvements after their nasal splint is removed. However, visible swelling may obscure the initial results. Over time, patients will begin to notice improvements such as enhanced symmetry, refined shape, and structural adjustments. If applicable, patients will also be able to experience improvements in their breathing. The results of open rhinoplasty are long-lasting and often permanent, allowing patients to enjoy their enhanced appearance without the need for ongoing treatments.
