About Gynecomastia Surgery
At Aeris, we tailor each treatment plan to the patient’s anatomy and the underlying cause of their condition. Some men benefit from liposuction alone, while most see the best results with a combination of liposuction and the surgical excision of glandular tissue. Our team can help recommend which treatment best suits your individual goals.
Benefits
Gynecomastia treatment offers numerous advantages, including:
- Improved Body Image: Patients often report feeling more comfortable and confident in their bodies after surgery.
- Enhanced Masculinity: A flatter chest aligns with traditional male aesthetics, allowing men to feel more masculine.
- Better Fitting Clothing: Many men notice improved fit and comfort when wearing fitted shirts post-surgery.
- Reduction of Irritation: Excess breast tissue can lead to skin irritation; removing this tissue alleviates discomfort.
- Psychological Benefits: Less embarrassment leads to improved self-esteem, potentially reducing anxiety related to social situations.
- Minimal Scarring: Modern surgical techniques allow for discreet incisions, leading to minimal visible scarring.
- Long-Lasting Results: Surgical techniques provide patients with long-term satisfaction with their results.
Ideal Candidates
Men who experience persistent breast tissue enlargement may be candidates for gynecomastia surgery. Candidates should be in good overall health, at a stable weight, and free from conditions that may impair healing. The best candidates are those who have not seen substantial results in their condition with non-surgical interventions such as dieting or exercise. In some cases, patients can see their gynecomastia resolve by addressing a hormonal imbalance or making changes to their medication regimens. If patients suspect their gynecomastia may be caused by these factors, they should first see if these different approaches might work for them; if the gynecomastia remains even after these adjustments, then gynecomastia can offer an effective solution for these patients.
For safety reasons, patients should be non-smokers or willing to quit nicotine long before the surgery is scheduled. Nicotine can have adverse effects on both the procedure and the healing process.
During a personal consultation, the team at Aeris will perform a detailed assessment of your case to determine whether you would benefit from surgical gynecomastia treatment.
Personal Consultation
Every procedure at Aeris begins with a personal consultation with one of our expert staff members. During this appointment, one of our experienced plastic surgeons will carefully listen to your concerns, conduct a physical examination, and explain all available treatment options. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about surgical technique, the recovery process, and expected outcomes. We take a customized approach to each patient; once we gather the necessary information about you and your goals, we will work to create a personalized treatment plan.

Preparation
Preparing for gynecomastia surgery is important for ensuring the best possible outcome. A member of our team will provide detailed preoperative instructions that typically include:
- Avoiding medications or supplements with blood-thinning properties before surgery
- Cease smoking or nicotine use several weeks before the procedure
- Arranging for transportation and post-operative support
You may also need to undergo bloodwork or imaging to rule out other causes of breast enlargement. Our staff will walk you through all the necessary preparatory steps and remain available to guide you the entire way.
Procedure
Your gynecomastia treatment will take place in one of Aeris’s accredited surgical suites. Each case of gynecomastia is unique to the individual; therefore, the details of each procedure may also differ. Depending on your treatment plan, your surgeon may use liposuction, direct excision, or a combination of the two. The combined approach is the most common method for addressing gynecomastia effectively.
For the combined approach, your surgeon will perform liposuction first. They will make small, discreet incisions in the targeted areas and inject a tumescent solution consisting of epinephrine, a local anesthetic, and saline. This solution swells the fat and makes it easier to remove. After letting the solution settle, your surgeon will use a suctioning cannula to break up and remove fat from the chest.
After removing the stubborn fat, your surgeon will use excisional techniques to remove any excess tissue. They will typically make a small incision around the areola to precisely remove breast tissue with an extremely discreet scar.
Recovery
Your surgeon will provide detailed recovery guidelines to ensure you heal optimally. Mild swelling, bruising, and soreness are common during the first few days but tend to resolve quickly. Most men return to light activity within a few days and resume full exercise within three to four weeks; however, patients should wait until they have approval from their surgeon to do so. If you have any questions during your recovery, our team will remain available to guide you through the process.
Results
Patients can notice positive results immediately after their surgery. The final results will become more visible as swelling subsides over the next few months. Our surgeons place incisions in discreet areas to minimize visibility, and these scars tend to fade significantly over time. Most patients enjoy a flatter, firmer chest and report a boost in confidence and body image. Patients who previously seldom felt comfortable taking their shirt off at the pool or beach often feel empowered to do so after this procedure.
Gynecomastia treatments are one of the most commonly performed male plastic surgery procedures, and they are frequently associated with improvements in overall quality of life. (3)

FAQ
Will my gynecomastia come back after surgery?
In some cases, gynecomastia can return after surgery, although this is less common. Maintaining a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle can help promote long-term results.
Will there be noticeable scarring after my gynecomastia procedure?
Our surgeons use discreet incision placements, often around the edge of the areola, to minimize visible scarring. These scars typically fade with time.
Is gynecomastia surgery painful?
Most patients report only mild to moderate discomfort during their recovery, which they can effectively manage with prescribed medication and by following aftercare instructions during the first few days of healing.
Can I exercise after my gynecomastia procedure?
You will need to avoid strenuous exercise for a few weeks, but you can resume light activity within a few days. Full workouts typically resume after 3-4 weeks with clearance from your surgeon.
Will insurance cover my gynecomastia procedure?
Because gynecomastia is typically considered a cosmetic procedure, it is not typically eligible for insurance coverage. However, we encourage you to reach out to your provider for more information if you are unsure about your coverage.
Can I treat my gynecomastia without surgery?
In some cases, patients can see effective results without surgery, especially in cases where the underlying cause of gynecomastia is medication or a hormonal imbalance. Some patients also see results with regular exercise and dieting. However, for many patients, gynecomastia is extremely difficult to address, making surgery an effective solution.
