About Breast Reductions
A breast reduction is a breast-enhancement procedure that removes excess tissue from the breasts to reduce their overall size and weight. Overly large breasts can sometimes cause emotional distress and chronic physical pain. Enlarged breasts can make it difficult to find properly-fitting clothing or comfortable bras—they can also cause skin irritation, and even make it harder to exercise or be active. A breast reduction aims to alleviate each of these concerns and more, allowing you to live more comfortably and confidently!
Benefits
Patients experience several benefits through breast reduction, including:
- Reduced Physical Discomfort: Breast reduction can reduce chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain that heavy breast tissue causes.
- Refined Proportions: This procedure can create a more balanced appearance between your breasts and your figure.
- More Shapely Breasts: Your surgeon may perform this procedure to address aesthetic concerns, such as unevenness and asymmetry.
- Better Posture: Reducing excess weight or pressure on your chest can make it easier to stand and sit straighter, improving your overall posture.
- Improved Range of Mobility: Reducing the size of your breasts can make performing physical activities easier and more comfortable.
- Diminished Skin Concerns: Breast reduction can reduce skin irritation and rashes caused by chafing and moisture.
- Lasting Results: Breast reductions often produce long-lasting results when patients maintain a stable weight.
- Elevated Self-Esteem: After their procedure, many women report feeling more comfortable, confident, and positive about their appearance.
- Personalized Treatment Plans: Our surgeons design each surgical plan around your specific concerns and anatomy, ensuring your results flatter your natural figure and frame.
Candidates
Breast reduction candidates are typically adolescent or adult women interested in reducing the size of their breasts. This procedure can also benefit those who experience irritation or chafing caused by overly large breasts, as well as those who suffer from chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain.
Candidates interested in breast reduction should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding their results. Patients should ideally be nonsmokers or willing to quit using nicotine for a period of time. The surgeons at Aeris will finalize each individual’s eligibility for this procedure during their consultation.
Personal Consultation
Before scheduling your procedure, you will attend a personal consultation. During this meeting, your surgeon will discuss the benefits and limitations of the procedure, discuss your medical history and aesthetic concerns, and answer all of your questions. Your surgeon will also perform a physical examination, as well as pre-operative tests such as mammograms, X-rays, and blood work. They will use this information to personalize a surgical plan that restores both your comfort and your confidence.
To schedule this consultation and receive your personalized surgical plan, please contact us online or call (305) 446-7700.
Preparation
After finalizing your procedure, we will give you detailed pre-operative instructions. We may ask that you discontinue taking blood-thinning medications and supplements—with the approval of your primary care physician—as well as fill any prescriptions necessary for your recovery. Patients must cease any nicotine and alcohol consumption in the weeks before and after their procedure for safety reasons.
You will not be able to drive home from the procedure, so it is important that you arrange transportation beforehand.
During your recovery, you will need to take time away from your responsibilities to focus on resting. By following all the instructions your surgical team provides, you can facilitate a safe procedure and smooth recovery.
Procedure
At the beginning of your procedure, we will cleanse and sanitize your skin, and then your anesthesiologist will place you under general anesthesia.
For a breast reduction, your surgeon will use an incision pattern called the Wise pattern. This is also known as the anchor incision or inverted-T incision. This pattern consists of a horizontal incision along the breast crease, an incision extending upward toward the nipple-areolar complex, and an incision around the circumference of the areola.
After making the necessary incisions, your surgeon will remove excess skin and tissue from the breasts. If necessary, they can use liposuction to remove fatty tissue from the breasts. After they achieve your desired breast size, they will close each incision before transferring you to our recovery suite to rest.
Recovery
Patients commonly experience swelling, bruising, or mild tenderness around their breasts after their procedure. These effects will gradually dissipate on their own, but you can also manage them with rest and prescribed medications. We may require you to wear a surgical support bra throughout your recovery, which will minimize further swelling and protect your new curves as your tissues heal.
Your surgeon will provide a full set of detailed post-operative instructions. These will include instructions on how to navigate incision care, when to change any dressings or bandages, follow-up care, activity restrictions, and more. After resting for several weeks, you will be able to return to your career and other light activities, but you will need to continue postponing exercise until your surgeon provides clearance.
Results
After you have fully recovered, you will be able to appreciate the complete results of your breast reduction. You can expect noticeable improvements in the shape and symmetry of your breasts, enhancing your overall body proportions. In addition, many patients experience lasting relief from chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain, allowing for greater comfort and confidence in daily life.
Patient satisfaction after breast reductions is high, with more than 95% of patients stating they would undergo the procedure again. (2)

FAQ
Will I be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Many women can breastfeed after a breast reduction, depending on the techniques your surgeon uses and the amount of tissue they remove. If you are interested in breastfeeding, please discuss this with your surgeon during your consultation.
Will there be any significant scarring after my breast reduction?
Yes, scarring is an unavoidable part of breast reduction surgery. The scars are usually most noticeable in the first few months but tend to fade and flatten over time. Can I combine my breast reduction with another cosmetic procedure?
Yes, many women combine their breast reduction with another procedure to enhance their overall figure or further rejuvenate their breasts. For further information regarding combined procedures, please schedule a consultation.
Do breast reductions have any risks?
Even with our high safety standards, every surgical procedure has risks. Risks may include infection, poor healing, unfavorable scarring, dissatisfaction with results, and more. Your surgeon will discuss every risk and how to avoid it before your procedure, ensuring you feel well-informed.
